WB and Hasbro have announced they will be giving the popular role-playing fantasy game, Dungeons & Dragons, a proper big-budget feature adaptation. For those of you who remember there have been a few feature films made of the role-playing game, but most of them have been flops.
The reason being special effects and budgets. Creating a film in a fantasy setting with dragons takes a lot of money. Not only do you have to pay for CGI to create the dragon, you have to get all the period costume and weapons. Because of this the special effects in the past D&D movies have lacked, which has caused the movies to suffer.
It seems that Warner Bros. is wasting no time getting this movie made. They already have a script, which was written by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2 and Wrath of the Titans).
Speaking about the film Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Bros. Pictures, said, “We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen… D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”
Echoing his comments Stephen Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, Inc., said, “This is such an enormous opportunity to bring the rich fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms to life and, together with the creative powerhouse of Warner Bros… D&D is the role-playing game that started it all and now we have the opportunity to ignite a franchise for its legions of avid fans in a way never done before.”
While there has been no official timeline for the movie, fans should be excited that someone is finally going to go BIG for one of the most popular fantasy franchises in the world.
