Let me start by saying I’ve been a Deadpool fan since New Mutants #98. As a kid I had the old Toy Biz Deadpool action figures. Deadpool was one of the bad guys and bounced around as an anti-hero. Over the years Deadpool has become more commercialized. Not that that’s bad but commercialization creates bandwagon fans. So with that being said….

Deadpool’s first ever live-action appearance was in 2009 in the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That movie left Deadpool fans with a very bad taste in their mouth. Fans appreciated the casting of Ryan Reynolds, but what they didn’t like was that the film stripped away everything about Deadpool that makes him Deadpool. They introduced Wade Wilson but that was as far as it went. When we next saw Wade as Deadpool he had no costume, a sewn up mouth, no mention of cancer, and a slew of mixed up powers.

Fast forward to February 2016, here I am sitting in the theater and I’m still excited to see Deadpool The Movie! Why? Because from what I’ve seen, Fox, Tim Miller, and Ryan Reynolds have heard the fans and have gone back to correct errors of the past.
They truly brought to life everyone’s favorite unorthodox, irreverent, violent, unpredictable anti-hero… Deadpool The “Merc With A Mouth”
Now some people know who Deadpool is but do they know his “origin”, per se? This movie is essentially an “origin” story. But I’m totally ok with that. Yes there are a few things in the beginning that could have been elaborated on, especially the Weapon X Program. But overall, it got to the point of how Deadpool was created. More importantly, THEY GOT THE COSTUME RIGHT! I mean you can’t have Spider-Man or Captain America without the costumes; they are iconic.

The costumes make the character. And damn it, did they make the character! Especially the mask…they paid attention to detail making sure his facial expressions were clearly visible through the mask. I’m a big fan of Wolverine but would love to see him don the classic Wolverine mask.
To me, the movie is a great nod to the Joe Kelly run from the late ’90s. Remember Weasel (T. J. Miller) and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams)? They’re there. Gotta include love interest Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin). Mix in baddies Ajax (Ed Skrein) and Angel Dust (Gina Carano). Also appearing are, The Recruiter (Jed Rees), X friends Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), who is completely unknown to me. There’s even a cameo by an essential sidekick who’s name rhymes with Rob.

Deadpool starts off with tons of innuendos and laughs. I actually laughed so hard that I sadly dropped my popcorn. There’s no shortage of action and the gore is minimal. Of course a faux love story needs some sex scenes. The sex scenes are a little raunchy but hilarious at the same time. As you know Stan Lee is notorious for the subtle cameos in each of his creations. I’d have to say this is my favorite Stan Lee cameo by far!
Deadpool is well worth the wait. It was definitely done well and stays pretty true to its comic roots. Deadpool offers comedy relief and plenty of action. This is not a kids movie by any means. It deserves the R rating but at the same time it’s what helps create the character. Nonetheless, I think this is one of the best movies so far this year and possibly one of the best superhero / anti- superhero movies ever. So grab a chimichanga, touch yourself a bit, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. But don’t get up too soon… Hang around for the credits. Wink wink.

Deadpool hits theaters nationwide Friday, February 12th.
