The POP-EXPOSE ‘Super Bowl Shorts’ by Mitchell Smith!

The Super Bowl was started in 1967 following the 1966 season. The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 is Super Bowl I, since then there have been many blowouts, but there have also been some very close games, big comebacks, and great wild plays. This is one of the hardest trophies to win in professional sports, and I’ve got a few highlighted Super Bowls where teams put forth a great effort but, came up a hair short of getting that illustrious Super Bowl ring.

Super Bowl XLII – The Patriots who were heavily favored after not loosing a single game that season were in line to end a perfect run with a Super Bowl win. The Giant’s Tyree made an unbelievable leaping one handed catch pinning the ball between his hand and helmet. The Giants would score to give themselves the lead and the Patriots’ perfect season was finished as they fell to the Giants 17-14.

Super Bowl V – It would go down as the Blunder Bowl – the Colts and Cowboys combined for 11 turnovers in the game, but it may have been the 10 penalties that cost Dallas the game as they lost 16-13. It was a close game but most people who played or watched the game try to forget that it was a Super Bowl game. Never the less the Colts earned themselves a Super Bowl championship.

Super Bowl VII – Miami jeopardized their perfect season as Garo Yepremian’s 41 yard field goal attempt was blocked and Washington got the ball and scored a touchdown. Washington’s hopes of a comeback were foiled as Miami was able to hold them the last 2:07 of the game and finished their perfect season with a 14-7 win.

Super Bowl XI – Minnesota was making their 4th appearance to a Super Bowl and once again they were defeated to become the first team to reach 4 Super Bowls without a win. The bills are the only other team to do this to date. The record set might not be a bad one though considering the teams who have never even reached that point at all.

Super Bowl XIII – Although the Steelers had the game in control, the Cowboys were able to mount a comeback scoring 2 touchdowns in the final minutes, Dallas fans were very hopeful that the great effort would get them one more score to extend or end the game, but the Cowboys came up short and Pittsburgh held onto a 35-31 victory.

Super Bowl XVI – San Francisco jumped out to a quick lead, but the Bengals did not give up mounting a comeback in the second half. The Bengals got a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the game, but the 49ers were able to recover the onside kick and the Bengals lost 26-21.

Super Bowl XXXVI – Patriots built a 17 point lead before Kurt Warner lead the Rams back and tied the game in the forth quarter. With 1:30 left in the game Tom Brady lead the Pats down the field and spoiled the Ram’s comeback as he set Adam Vinatieri up for a game winning field goal as time expired.

Super Bowl XXXVIII – One of the best Super Bowls played it was a hard fought game highlighted by Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at half time. The game could have went to either team but New England was able to pull out another win off the foot of Vinatieri as they defeated the Panthers 32-29.

Super Bowl XXIII – A rematch of Super Bowl XVI and the Bengals were up on the Niners. It looked like they would get their revenge and claim the teams first Super Bowl. The 49ers would drive 92 yards as Joe Montana hit John Taylor for a touchdown with 34 seconds left . The Bengals let their 16-13 lead slip away and lost the game.

Super Bowl XXV – The Bills and Giants played a great game. It was the start of the Bills 4 year run as Super Bowl participants. This was a game with no turnovers in it. Down 19-20 Jim Kelly brought the Bills to the 29 yard line and set up a go ahead field goal attempt by Scott Norwood only to miss wide right by a couple feet. Giants would run the clock out and win the game 20-19.

Super Bowl XXXIV – It was a great battle between Tennessee and St. Louis. The Titans were down and running short on time. They drew up one last play to get a touch down and kick a field goal for the tie and send the game to over time. I remarkable play was called and Kevin Dyson would get the ball on the 5 yard line only to be stopped inches of getting a touchdown as time expired, and the Titans would fall to the St. Louis Rams 23-16.

This year Super Bowl 50 is shaping up to be Carolina dominated, but it would be nice to see the Broncos hold it close and maybe see the old man go out in a blaze of glory. Good luck and may the best team win.
