The POP-EXPOSE ‘VOLTRON’ by Mitchell Smith!

Voltron has been reborn do to the Netflix release last week. I had flashbacks of my childhood as I sat and watched the first few episodes with my 9 year old. Saturday mornings for me as a 9 year old would sometimes involve waking up too early. Turning on the TV to early on a Saturday morning in 1984 would result in an familiar rainbow of lines, but very unfamiliar to today’s 9 year olds. Patiently sitting for the station to start it’s first cartoon of the day. The first hour was normally less popular and then all the best cartoons would come on. I don’t remember a pilot show for Voltron, I don’t remember characters names, or backstories.
The one thing I remember was what I was waiting for when I took a look at this reboot series, it was a familiar site and I flashed back 30 some years. 5 Robotic lions doing a streaking colorful dive into the sky and clicking together to form one fighting machine – VOLTRON. As a kid this was the only part I was waiting for, I didn’t really care about any back story or characters, I wanted to see the lions for Voltron and fight off what ever evil might be coming at them. Now watching the new series I took a great interest in where the characters had been, and where they were, and where they were going.
I’m going completely by memory here so I’m not sure if there was a back story on the characters back in 1984, but my son seemed to take a great interest not only in the action of the new Netflix series, but with the characters as well. So I began to think that maybe I just didn’t have someone back when I was a kid to explain the story to me. So we both sat and watched and enjoyed the first few episodes and I can’t wait to share more episodes with my son. The show is well laid out. It is funny, interesting, action packed and leaves me wanting more. Long life Voltron.
