New ‘Barbarella’ Movie Starring Sydney Sweeney: Jane and Honey Goldman to Co-Write, Edgar Wright in Talks to Direct

Following the success of her recent Sony film Anyone But You, the studio is eager to keep Sydney Sweeney in the spotlight. Sources reveal that Jane and Honey Goldman are negotiating to write a new Barbarella movie starring Sweeney, with Edgar Wright in talks to direct. Although the project is still in development due to Sweeney’s busy schedule and Wright’s commitment to his The Running Man reboot starring Glen Powell, the studio is committed to moving forward.
The decision to bring in the Goldmans demonstrates Sony’s dedication to making this film a success. Jane Goldman has a proven track record with franchises like the rebooted X-Men series and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Jane will co-write the script with her daughter, Honey, and Wright. Sweeney is also set to executive produce.
Wright has been interested in the project for a while, having met with Sweeney soon after the project was announced. Although he initially agreed only to develop the project, the strong ties between Wright and Sony, stemming from his hit Baby Driver, make him a fitting choice for the film’s creative direction. The project aims to match the fun and visually creative style Wright is known for.
Details about the new Barbarella film are scarce, but the 1968 original, directed by Roger Vadim, follows a 41st-century astronaut tasked with stopping the evil scientist Durand Durand, who threatens the galaxy with his Positronic Ray. While the original film was not a major box office hit, it has since achieved cult classic status. In 2020, the Forest estate announced plans for a new adaptation.
This new development follows the impressive performance of Sweeney and Glen Powell’s rom-com Anyone But You, which grossed $210 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
The Goldmans are represented by WME, Wright by CAA, and Sweeney by Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson, and Teller.
