Nicolas Cage Returns as Spider-Man Noir in Live-Action Series

Nicolas Cage, known for his role in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” is set to portray Spider-Man Noir in a new live-action Marvel TV series. While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has seen mixed success on the big screen, the studio is expanding its reach to the small screen with this series on Prime Video and MGM+. The show will be executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were also involved with the Spider-Verse films. Several other live-action Spider-Man projects are also in development.

After previously announcing discussions with Prime Video and MGM+ for the Spider-Man Noir series, a deal has been finalized. Cage will headline the series, as revealed during Amazon’s Upfront presentation. Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, and Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, made a joint statement:

Vernon Sanders: “Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity, and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers. Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero, and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”

Katherine Pope: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character. Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

This announcement makes Spider-Man Noir the first Spider-Man to be cast in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The live-action series will be titled “Noir.” According to a new synopsis, the series “tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Unlike traditional Spider-Man stories, this series will focus on a new character under the mask, not Peter Parker.

Cage’s return as Spider-Man Noir is exciting, given his previous success in the role. His performance in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” contributed significantly to the character’s popularity. Cage’s vocal expressiveness and animated style will now be brought to life in a live-action format.

Although it appears that the Noir series will be separate from the Spider-Verse films, the project has already enlisted Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot as showrunners. Emmy Award-winning director Harry Bradbeer (known for the Enola Holmes franchise) will direct the first two episodes. Production for “Noir” is expected to begin later this year, with a potential premiere in 2025.
