Just when you thought the latest ‘Friday the 13th‘ reboot news had beaten a dead horse into dust, TV is hockey-masking up for a few shots, as well. ‘Friday the 13th’ is officially moving forward with a new hourlong TV series set across “multiple time periods,” with ‘Terminator‘ and ‘Avatar‘ writers on board to bring Jason Voorhees to life once more.
Where previously we heard that ‘V/H/S’ director David Bruckner was on board to reboot the film franchise (again) with a found-footage offering, now Deadline reports that Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment will produce a new hourlong series “based upon the characters and settings of ‘Friday the 13th.’” Original 1980 director Sean S. Cunningham will executive produce along with EFO Films principals Randall Emmett & George Furla, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment MM, Steve B. Harris of Diversion3 Entertainment, Fox Entertainment and more.
As for the story, Bill Basso (‘Terminator’) and Jordu Schell (Avatar’) are reportedly developing a storyline that “re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods,” though a contemporary Crystal Lake setting will see characters confronting the mask-wearing killer’s return, as “new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.” Yeesh.
Says original feature director Cunningham of the new series:
Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide
Horror Inc. President Robert Barsamian added:
Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of ‘Friday the 13th’ but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.
No network has yet been attached, but what do you think? Does ‘Friday the 13th’ rebooted for TV sound any more promising than another feature film adaptation? How would you like to see Jason’s machete cleaving the tube in?
