Nicholas Galitzine Cast as He-Man in Upcoming ‘Masters of the Universe’ Film

Nicholas Galitzine is set to uncover fabulous secret powers in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Masters of the Universe. The Mary & George star has been cast to wield the iconic Power Sword as He-Man in the Amazon MGM Studios film, according to Variety.

After nearly two decades of development struggles that could rival the challenges faced by Skeletor, the Masters of the Universe movie is finally gaining momentum. Travis Knight, known for his work on Bumblebee, will direct the film from a script by Chris Butler (ParaNorman). The film is scheduled for release on June 5, 2026. The casting of Galitzine as He-Man, the mighty alter ego of Prince Adam of Eternia, marks a significant milestone in the project’s journey. Julie Rapaport, head of film production and development at Amazon MGM Studios, stated, “We’re thrilled to bring the beloved Masters of the Universe to life and couldn’t be more excited to announce the immensely talented Nicholas Galitzine as our He-Man. This reintroduction of the character and his universe will be an epic film that will delight audiences from here to Eternia.”

Why Has It Taken So Long to Make ‘Masters of the Universe’? Despite being the first of the 1980s toy franchises to transition to live action, Masters of the Universe has lagged behind others like Transformers and G.I. Joe. The 1987 film, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, was produced by Cannon Films, a studio known for its financial troubles, and the film went significantly over budget. This financial failure meant that the teased sequel never materialized. However, as fans of the original series grew older, demand for a new film increased. Over the years, numerous directors, including McG and Jon Chu, were attached to the project, but none came to fruition. Most recently, Netflix planned a version with Kyle Allen as He-Man and Aaron and Adam Nee directing, but the project was canceled after $30 million had already been spent on development.

Galitzine is no stranger to portraying royalty, although He-Man’s attire is quite different from the regal outfits he’s accustomed to. He starred as Prince Robert alongside Camilla Cabello in Cinderella and as Prince Henry with Taylor Zakhar Perez in Red, White & Royal Blue, both Amazon productions. Currently, he can be seen as George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, in the Starz miniseries Mary & George, and as pop star Hayes Campbell in The Idea of You.

Masters of the Universe is set for release on June 5, 2026.
