The POP-EXPOSE ‘Tommy James and the Shondells’ by Mitchell Smith!

Tommy James and the Shondells are a rock group that formed in 1959. Tommy James who was only 12 years old at the time was the lead singer. Over the years they have had some #1’s, but they have been a staple for other rock bands and have had some of their hits covered and become staples for the cover bands. Their first hit was Hanky Panky, but their second hit “Crimson and Clover”, has been a song long covered by Joan Jett.

I love both versions of this song and both bands do a great job. Another one of Tommy’s songs that was covered and played at every high school dance in the 80’s was “Mony Mony” covered my Billy Idol and toped the charts. This one still gets quit a bit of play time and is just one of those songs that can bring you instantly back in time. Tiffany covered and hit the #1 spot on the charts with “I Think We’re alone Now”, which put her on the pop charts in the 80’s, and I’m not sure she did much outside of this song but it was enough to give her name a lasting impression.

I listened Tommy Jame’s 1999 concert the other day and some other hits of the band’s included “Sweet Cherry Wine”, “Mirage”, and “Crystal Blue Persuasion” were staples and the band still has an unbelievable sound. It’s a shame they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as they were a huge influence on the 70’s and 80’s music. So if you are in store for some good old rock n roll, check out Tommy James and the Shondells. They have a pure and awesome sound and blow a lot of todays music out of the water.
