Read MoreBackgroundThis issue of G.I.Joe is a direct echo of the Cold War 1980’s. It surrounds a mission to recover a downed experimental Russian flying vehicle in the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan. For those a bit fuzzy on their 1980’s history, Russia and other communist countries were conglomerated together as part of something called the “Soviet Union.” Afghanistan is one of the “Stan’s” that was not part of this union. Afghanistan bordered Russia. Border and other disputes resulted in Russian entanglements in Afghanistan. Normally, a world super-power like Russia would trample…

Read MoreDo you still have your vintage G.I. Joe’s? Last weekend I had to take a trip home for personal family related issues. My wife stayed home for a couple previous engagements, so I was able to think about going to my old house to find my Joes from when I was a kid. My wife isn’t exactly accepting of my harmless pastime, so I normally wouldn’t go hunting for old Joes with her around. The thought had crossed my mind several times to look for them, but I could never…

Read MoreThis issue was a stand-alone issue that primarily hyped the G.I. Joe battle tank the M.O.B.A.T. (Motorized Battle Attack Tank). At the time, there was a strong symbiotic relationship between Hasbro (selling action figures, vehicles, and playsets) and Marvel, promoting toys sales, while advancing an ongoing story theme and developing characters. Larry Hama wrote the comics as well as the file-cards on the back of the action figure packaging for Hasbro. Sunbow’s after school cartoons completed the trifecta promoting the toys and the story. Although Larry Hama created the characters,…

Read MoreThe 1993 line up of G.I.Joe figures was a pretty potent one. The vehicles were not plentiful, but there were a few nice ones, and there were several sub groups and upgrades that made this year one of the great years for GI Joe (I’m considering the 1982 to 2017 years all great years in my opinion. Except the couple of years were it died off.) I do want to take a few minutes to take a closer look at some of the vehicles and figures from this year. The first sub…
Read MoreIssue 4: Operation: Wingfield This issue has a really nice cover that has nothing to do with the comic. This is not a bad thing, but the cover shows many Joes running straight forward in a V formation, charging in to save the day. And that is symbolic of what they do in this issue. That and prevent the beginning of World War III. More on that in a bit. The issue begins with the sunglass wearing visage of a man sporting a handle-bar mustache that would make 80’s Milwaukee…
Read MoreStory by Skinny Perhaps you do or do not know who Aubrey Sitterson is. He is the current writer for IDW’s G.I.JOE series. He wrote for the WWE and also wrote IDW’s hit crossover involving Street Fighter. A title I rather enjoyed. He has been writing and pushing the envelope and also some GIJOE Facebook group’s buttons. It is no accident that some themes have crept into the GIJOE title that are not usually present. Aubrey has been rubbing the people in the GIJOE Facebook group discussions the wrong…

Read MoreIssue 2: Panic at the North Pole “Back in the day,” I originally enjoyed the Sunbow cartoon and began contemplating which would be the best figures and vehicles to work toward with limited resources. I earned chore money of 25 or 50 cents at a time (or maybe at a month). So it took a while to make the 2 to 3 bucks needed for a figure. I didn’t really collect comics at the time, but stumbled upon Issue #15 at a corner store in the middle of nowhere Michigan,…
