THE POP EXPOSE – ‘The Karate Kid Franchise’ Discussion By Mitchell Smith!

Good morning everybody. Today I’m taking a look at the Karate Kid franchise. The first movie was released back in 1984. It was followed up in 1986 and 1989. The Next Karate Kid was in 1994 that featured Hilary Swank and there is a 2010 movie with no original characters. Finally there are 3 seasons and another coming of Cobra Kai which has brought back many original characters from the original trilogy. Growing up I did not see The Karate Kid in the theaters but this was a smash hit when it finally came out on The Movie Channel.

There are so many memorable moments from the first movie but my all time favorite line and I still use quite often is “wax on wax off”. It’s just a great line and it was delivered so well. The first movie was really moving and the cast was perfectly picked from Mr. Miyagi right down to Mrs. LaRusso. It took me a while to start Cobra Kai and I put it off for several months after watching the first 10 minutes of the first episode. I was waiting for my kids to watch it with me so I finally gave up waiting and binge watched it in about 4 days. It was really good and I decided to go back and watch the 3 originals.

I also watched The Next Karate Kid which wasn’t bad, but I think the idea of Hilary trying to be a feminist was better portrayed in Million Dollar Baby 10 years after this movie. I have not watched the 2010 version but that may be how I finish up my long weekend. Overall this is a great eighties movie and I’m glad Cobra Kai has been able to show us a live version of what are they doing now. I can’t wait for season 4. I wonder if we will see other people come back such as Jessica or Mike. Enjoy the day and have a nice week everyone.
