THE POP EXPOSE – ‘ZZ TOP’ By Mitchell Smith!

ZZ TOP

ZZ Top is an American blues and rock band. The band consists of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard. The trio have been playing together for over 50 years a remarkable feat in itself in the professional music world. This Texas trio started out playing blues in local small town venues. They experimented with a lot of different sounds to create a new rock sound. They started to expand their venues but decided to take a break after a long tour. The band was exhausted and the break was much needed. It ended up being a 2 year break but the 3 got back together with a new sense of music and band image.

Billy and Dusty had already started growing their signature beards and the band was ready to hit bigger venues with new material. The dawn of MTV paved the way to ZZ Top getting popularity and recognition of there unique music. The image of hot rods, sexy women, and the signature beards shot them onto the TV and into every ones home. I remember watching the Legs video on TV and by that point ZZ Top was a household name. I was watching That Little Ol’ Band From Texas on Netflix over the weekend, the documentary on ZZ Top. I guess I always thought they were big stars with those big beards since they got together in the 60’s. They had many obstacles and challenges to overcome before they hit it big.

This is a great documentary and worth watching. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Party on the Patio. They have so many great hits though and I think this one doesn’t get as much attention as some of their other songs. ZZ Top is still touring today and I hope they venture over my way, but toward the end of summer they will hook up with Def Leopard, that is going to be a mega show if you get a chance to go, don’t miss out.
