THE POP EXPOSE – REMEMBERING TINA TURNER!

Story by Mitchell Smith

“Oh What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a second hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?

Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?” Tina Turner born 1939 in Tennessee, was coined the Queen of Rock. Growing up in the eighties Turner had the most awesome hair. What an icon performing in Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. She was truly an inspiration to everyone. Turner started out in 1957 with Ike, well what can we say about Ike. Turner exploded her career in the eighties. A time of peace, well somewhat anyways. It was a time where expression meant everything, “And we’re rolling, rolling, rolling on the river, And we’re rolling, rolling, rolling on the river, Listen to the story”, and a story she had. Married to the late great Ike Turner they were Ike and Tina Turner in the sixties and seventies.

Back in the day I didn’t get MTV, but TBS played weekly videos and that’s where I discovered Tina. She was an amazing performer with a booming voice. By that time Tina had already divorced Ike, went through a rough financial patch, and made her comeback all on her own. She was part of the greatest choir ever assembled when Michael Jackson got together a number of performers to make “We are the World”. Along side many greats like The Boss, Willy, Ray, Stevie, Ross and so many more of some of the best and most distinct voices in music over the past 70 years. Mad Max helped slingshot her career back into the forefront and the sky was the limit from there on out. “ When the heartache is over

I know I won’t be missing you (missing you)
Won’t look over my shoulder
‘Cause I know that I can live without you
Oh live without you

Oh I can live without you”. Turner released her last album in 1999 and kept on performing right up to her death on May 24th. She had various health issues and they eventually overtook her. Turner has left a mark on the world that will not soon be forgotten. A talent that blessed us for so many years rest in peace Ms. Anna Mae Bullock. Did you enjoy the music of Tina Turner?
