G.I.Joe

A Look Back At 1995 G.I. Joe Extreme

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m rolling it make to a troubled time in the GI Joe world. It was a transitional time in my life as well. I was in college and I pledged a fraternity which led me to meeting many different people and having many different experiences I probably would not have had otherwise. One person led me half way across the state and built a family with me. Similar to my trying times GI Joe took a completely different route from their ever so popular O-ring figures. Hasbro went with some interesting looking figures that lacked articulation but actually looked pretty cool. I won’t lie I wouldn’t mind seeing some modern figures of some of these characters like Lt. Stone, SGT Savage, or Iron Claw. Although they lack the articulation GI Joe fans were accustomed to at the time the head sculpts and uniforms weren’t horrible.

These were probably not widely collected and I got all of mine in a collection I bought from my local comic book store, years ago. I definitely would not have went out and bought these otherwise but in hand they are really kind of cool. They did produce a few vehicles for this line that did not make much sense because they could not sit in them. The seat was just a big hole that you could stand the figure up in. It is not a surprise this was short lived and this was the only year the line ran.

Overall I’m happy that I have these in my collection but I’m also happy GI Joe made it over that hurdle and moved back to the really awesome articulated figures we know and love. Who had these back in the day? Just curious what a kid thought about these that may have received these as their first Joes? Make sure to check back for our next discussion.
