Exploring G.I. Joe: Renegades (2010-2011) – An Alternate Timeline Take on the Joes

Story by Mitchell Smith
Welcome to The Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at the 2010-2011 GI Joe series Renegades. This is an origin, What If type series. Creators took existing Joes and created an alternate time line where the main cast are younger and every person the main 4 characters, Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock, and Tunnel Rat, come across are not part of the Joe team. At times they have an A-Team vibe to them. It’s an interesting take and a lot of different characters come into play. Likewise on the Cobra side the Cobra force is slowly growing with many main characters from the original series. Much of the story line does not follow the original ARAH storyline but it is an interesting take on many different characters. Overall I thought it was a good series and made some interesting takes on Joe and Cobra characters.
Although the series ended with just 26 episodes there were a few toys made including the Baroness’ Black Dragon and a HISS tank along with a few figures like T-Rat, Duke, and Scarlet, and Roadblock was released years later in 2017 as a SDCC box set exclusive. Just the start of many figures not produced and/or released into the mainstream for this series. I think Hasbro really missed the boat on this one or maybe we as fans were not ready for a new story on Joes. I know at the time I passed on buying these figures and wasn’t in a hurry to watch the series. We will be coming up on 15 years but I think it might take at least the 20th anniversary to get a reissue on these figures and perhaps make some of the characters we didn’t get like Bender and Baroness. I think Jinx in the cyber suit would be really awesome as well. Not sure if we will ever see them
But a Classified scale of some of these characters would be cool, but that is way down the list as we await for some of our favorite characters to finally get a figure. Make sure to check back next week for the next discussion at The Outpost.
