Cross Country vs. Klepto-Cobras: G.I. Joe Closes Out ’86 with Sewer Shenanigans!

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to The Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at the last episode of the G.I. Joe Cartoon in 1986, episode 30 “Into your tent I will silently creep”. 1986 started out with one of my favorite mini series “Arise Serpentor Arise” and finished with a episode that didn’t quite close out the year. Never the less this episode starts out with Cross Country and the Joes being attacked in the snow by a bunch of Tele Vipers with short sleeves on. In the end they destroy the Havoc and Cross Country’s tape deck and his favorite country and western tape.

After getting a new tape deck someone stole it along with many other Joe’s things coming up missing. Cross Country sets a Walkman out for bait and discovers a giant rat taking their things. He goes down a classic 80’s chase through the vent and into the sewer to discover an underground secret society of Cobra. I always thought this was a bit of a goofy episode, but it does lead us into the 1987 GI Joe the movie somewhat. Cross Country got his episode that had an Indiana Jones feel to it. In the end he has a battle with Storm Shadow. Although Cross Country held his own, ultimately it was the Joe team that came to the rescue and chased off Storm Shadow, Firefly, and Cobra Commander. Overall this was a good episode and kind of showed the separation of Cobra and Serpentor lining up the next chapter of GI Joe. Make sure to check back next week for the next discussion at The Outpost.
