G.I. Dave’s Cartoon Realism: Silly or Gritty? “An Eye for an Eye”

Story by @G_I_DAVE

Alright G.I. Joe Friends, pull up a chair. We’re diving Episode 40 “An Eye for an Eye.” I remembered this one really different from back in the day. Not the wildest sci-fi episode, not the goofiest, but one of those quieter entries that actually has some neat stuff goin on when you look at it as an adult, and some absolute absurdity.

As a kid I loved the action. As an adult? Rewatching it now, the civilian collateral damage, the OPSEC failures, the personal vengeance vs. professional discipline… this one was really different from my memory. Let’s break it down phase by phase the way I always do. The tactical moments mixed with classic cartoon nonsense. Here we go!
Intro.jpgThe Convoy and the Ambush
The Joes are moving a high-value fusion-engine experimental plane on a mountain road in the snow. Flint’s driving a “dragon wagon” type flatbed with twin AA mounts fore and aft of the cargo, Snow Cats providing escort (Alpine, Bazooka, Recondo, Snow Job, Airtight and the usual suspects), Lady Jaye in the passenger seat. Classic logistics movement under threat.
Convoy.jpgCobra hits them with a layered ambush — Snow Serpents on the ground creating chokepoints and obstacles. The Ambush here is REALLY cool, as we see the Snow Serpents with the classic Under folder, and even load and fire an AT weapon. The convoy gets out of the ambush Killbox, and the Serpents radio to Cobra Commander, and we see Rattlers and F.A.N.G.s engage from the air. Cobra Commander is personally in one of the Rattlers, it’s pretty gangster to think he’s Fixed wing qualified AND leading the attack. The Joes fight back hard. They clear blockades, knock birds out of the sky… the ambush and battle scene is probably the best part of the entire episode, “action wise”.
Ambush.jpgLoadin.jpgATtack.jpgClassic.jpgCloseone.jpgSnowcat.jpgCobra commander issues a direct order to not destroy the cargo, and disable the vehicle so they can secure the “Fusion engine jet”.
Baller.jpgNochance.jpgAAgun.jpgCut to a scene where we see a cabin with a woman and 2 kids making cookies, and they notice the sound of battle. They ask if it’s thunder, step outside and witness this savage fight.
Niceday.jpgLady Jaye jumps out of the passenger seat to mount the fire AA gun and some fangs are knocked down. For some reason, Jaye decides she will have better luck flinging a spear at the last fang, rather than use the AA gun, and the F.A.N.G.s are scrapped. Yeah. Not my favorite part. You would think a tier 1 operator with a decent mounted weapon would be pretty effective instead of jumping out to toss a stick with a pointy end…but hey ..cartoons right?
Fangattack.jpgSticksnstones.jpgThe Commander sees his forces get Srakked, and decides “If cobra can’t have it, no one will!” And proceeds on a strafing run with THREE Rattlers, and not a single one of them hits SHIT. One Rattler is Smoked from the AA gun manned by Airtight, they circle back and Lady Jaye decides to spear a rattler now.
Nochance2.jpgI can’t even begin to “realistically” described what would need to happen, for an Olympian level spear thrower to hit an incoming ATTACK JET, on an attack run…but it happens. And when the jet gets speared, it goes down and crashed inro the cabin.
Cabinfever.jpgRescue.jpgLady Jaye and Bazooka immediately shift to civilian rescue. Mom and the boy get out. Lady Jaye goes back into the burning structure and pulls the little girl out just before the place collapses. Light injuries overall. Cabin is WASTED.
Tactical take: Route selection through restrictive mountain terrain near civilian structures? Risky. Ground-moving experimental aviation assets when you could airlift is already asking for trouble. The ambush itself is textbook combined-arms disruption. Joes’ response is aggressive and competent. The civilian rescue priority is SOLID — real ROE mindset. But the collateral is the spark that lights the whole episode. Fog of war is real.
We see a man emerge from the airport, and some seriously greasy looking guys tell him “there’s been an accident, come with me”
Skeezydudes.jpg
Charles Fairmont, the man from the airport shows up to the hospital HOT. The Joe’s are there in the waiting area, and he confronts Flint and Lady Jaye, we can all understand how a man would be pissed this happened, and is pretty snarky to the Joes, and asks to speak to the doctor.
The doctor gives the injury report. Lady Jaye explains it was Cobra’s attack and the plane crash that caused everything. Fairmont isn’t hearing it. “You bring a war to my door… and all you can say is you’re sorry?!” He storms out vowing to settle the score himself.
Charliefairmont.jpgYouguys.jpgFirst off, what kind of guy leaves his family in the hospital, while they are still recovering, to go seek vengeance on a terrorist organization? Yeah…real classy pal.

Lady Jaye’s carrying guilt, this is LEGIT. In combat things happen. Sometimes horrible things that are not intended HAPPEN, and even if you didn’t have intention, sometimes you can smear shit all over everything, and have to carry that with you. We see the Joes in a rec area watching TV at a base, and Jaye expresses her guilt and walks away to be alone.
Guilt.jpgDisguise .jpgFairmont, dressed as an Army officer, bluffs and KO’s an MP and walks right into Joe Headquarters. This guy walks right in, and he tries to pull Cobra intel off the computers. Lady Jaye catches him. He guilt-trips her hard — “Lady, you owe me.” And she buys it. She agrees to fly him to what she thinks is an abandoned Cobra munitions base northwest of San Francisco. Unauthorized… Solo… With a civilian…
Polly overhears this conversation between Charlie and Jaye before they jump in a Skystriker and fly out.
SERIOUSLY? Have fun in Leavenworth. This is WAY beyond going rogue, this is a serious breach of trust, security, and on and on.
Heardthat.jpgSupbro.jpgYouoweme.jpgTactical take: HQ security failure is real. A motivated civilian just walked into the Pit (or whatever thus facility is). That’s an OPSEC black eye. Lady Jaye’s decision is pure emotion overriding discipline. Chain of command? Gone. Support? Zero. Recon? None. This is the exact kind of rogue move that gets people killed in the real world. Fairmont’s pure vengeance motive is understandable human nature… and operational poison. Lady Jaye SHOULD have arrested this guy, no matter how she felt.
Lady Jaye and Fairmont take off in the Skystriker, I guess it’s that easy to get clearance to just take an armed fighter out for a cruise. Of course there is a Rattler intercept. She kills it after taking hits to the tail. She was going to attempt to land it, but then they get painted by Cobra’s new toy: the Power Destroyer. A big fixed energy weapon firing an “ebony ray” that kills power sources in vehicles. Instant EMP-style shutdown. The Skystriker goes down in the water. They manage to escape the sinking jet and swim to the island beach.

Cobra Commander and this Dr. Fillmoss are running live tests with Major Bludd. They assume the Joes found the site and order a beach search. They have no idea this is a rogue incursion. Major Bludd is Dispatched to find the survivors.

Tactical take: Flying a single fighter into a possible enemy site with zero backup or electronic support is reckless as hell. The Power Destroyer itself is a classic Cobra “superweapon of the week,” but conceptually it’s a directed-energy anti-vehicle system. Real-world parallel thinking exists (EMP, high-power microwave concepts). Cobra using the crash as free target practice is efficient. Base security is reactive, not proactive — another opening. Think about that, the Cobra high command has a prototype high value Weapon, and they don’t even have Radar to detect if there are incoming threats.
Dentist.jpgDentist.jpg (357 KiB) Viewed 4 timesBludd .jpgCapture .jpgCapture .jpg (471.99 KiB) Viewed 4 timesCobra Commander interrogates Lady Jaye with the classic mind-control tiara. It works, she tells him there is no attack planned, but he says “turn this thing to ELEVEN, and get me the truth. Fairmont knocks out a Cobra sentry, grabs a Cobra uniform, walks in, KO’s Bludd and frees her.
Oww.jpgMindtiara.jpgMindtiara.jpg (307.01 KiB) Viewed 4 timesPump the breaks. We see this guy whine from pain in his hand, when he KOs a trooper, but then he just got the drop on, AND KOs one of the worlds most dangerous Mercenary?!? You list me there. We get a whiff that Fairmont may have been a soldier, as he mentions something about “this was as tough as basic training”, so he’s not completely useless, but still whines about his hand everytime he socks someone.
They hit the munitions room, grab grenades, plant diversion charges, and push for the Power Destroyer. Well, I guess we are here, we should just blow stuff up, RIGHT?
Rescueagain.jpgAmmodump.jpgNowwehaveradar.jpgRadar NOW picks up the Joe relief force inbound. Targeting locks. Countdown starts. Lady Jaye can’t break the countdown, and Charlie tried his hand at using a computer, but Cobra busts in interrupting that play. They find the Power Destroyer and Jaye tells him to use his last grenade to destroy it. Fairmont hesitates — he wants that last grenade for Cobra Commander personally. She hits him with the “Joes are family” line. He throws. Grenade finds a “death star exhaust port”, and the weapon goes up.
Grenade.jpgGrenade exhaust port.jpgTactical take: Enemy uniform ruse is classic (and risky). Internal security is Swiss cheese — untrained civilian moves around effectively. Fairmont finally makes the right call and prioritizes the high-value system over personal kill. That’s growth. The grenade accuracy is pure cartoon (hundreds of feet into a tiny vent), but the principle of hitting a critical vulnerability on a fixed system is there, just really cheesy.

The Joes arrive (Flint, Roadblock, etc.). With the Power Destroyer down, they paradrop under residual fire with a gaggle of green shirts while Lady Jaye starts lighting up the command area. Fairmont breaks off, gets the drop on Cobra Commander near a Rattler, then gets himself taken hostage. This is awesome, classic Cobra Commander here, and threatens to wax the civilian if the Joe’s don’t drop em. The Joes drop weapons. Of course the Commander and Bludd escape. Fairmont is pissed they didn’t let him die trying to end the head snake.

Lady Jaye’s response is pure professional: “Our job is saving lives — not helping good men throw theirs away.”
Hostage prioritization is correct doctrine. Personal vengeance almost creates a worse outcome, and this entire situation would have never happened if we didn’t have a civilian apprehended for breaking into a US base…
Assault.jpgAssault2.jpgGotcha .jpgGo4it.jpgGiveup.jpgWe then cut to Fairmont reuniting with the family. His wife correctly chews him out. He still isn’t done with Cobra, as he says he will chill with his vengeance against them “Sure, for now”. Flint and Lady Jaye tell him to leave it to the pros. I know my filecards well, but double checked, there is no Joe with the last name Fairmont that I can find.
Final Verdict: Silly or Gritty?
Letthepros.jpgDidhejust.jpgAllsgreat.jpgHeavily Silly. Some gritty.
Gritty/SOLID:
• Real collateral damage and the political/psychological fallout.
• Guilt driving bad decisions.
• OPSEC failures that feel authentic.
• Professional restraint winning over personal revenge.
• The tension between civilians who get burned by the secret war and the operators who fight it.
Silly/Cartoon:
• The Power Destroyer vent grenade shot.
• HQ breach by one angry dad.
• Instant mind-control tiara that doesn’t work, or does it?
• Cobra’s usual “test the new toy on the first Joe that shows up” instant opportunity.
This episode is one of the better “what the war actually costs regular people” stories the Sunbow run ever did. Lady Jaye’s character moment is strong. Fairmont is a believable angry civilian that lost everything because of collateral damage. And the core lesson lands: leave the fighting to the professionals, or you become the problem. How would the world work, if every person just took everything into their own hands against other organizations, nations, or Armies?
Collateral damage is REAL. We are seeing so much of it everyday, and the REAL message is just that. Civilians LOSE in modern war and combat. Taking a familie’s home, loved ones, and land just creates more enemies and problems. This is something we, as humans still can’t figure out how to handle. Civilians are used as shields, tools, and pay the price for modern war.
As always — tell me where I’m right, tell me where I’m wrong, or tell me your favorite moment from this one in the comments. I really remembered this one different. The rewatch set me straight, and I realized how overall silly this one was. The beginning battle action was great as a kid, but seeing this one now as an adult, just does not make sense in so many ways.
