JOHN MADDEN

John Madden was born April 10th 1936 in Minnesota and moved to Daly City, CA when he was young. He played football at Oregon before transferring to San Mateo Cal Poly-SLO and was drafted to the NFL in 1958. John was a standout in high school, and won all conference honors at offensive tackle at Cal Poly as well as playing catcher for their baseball team. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but a knee injury ended his dream to be an NFL star. Madden graduated with a teaching degree and would end up revitalizing is love for football at Allan Hancock College where he was promoted to head coach in 1962. Madden then went to San Diego State as an assistant coach under coach Don Coryell, John thought very highly of him.

Madden was hired as an assistant coach by the Oakland Raiders, in 1969 Madden was named head coach of the Raiders. Madden finished his extraordinary coaching career with 103-32-7 record, and brought home one Super Bowl championship. Madden’s career was furthered by broadcasting and in 1988 the Madden Football video game franchise was born.
Madden is a walking legend. I loved playing Madden Football when I was younger and I still have Madden 95 and 98 for Super NES and I have Madden for the Xbox, but I like the old school Super NES if I find time to play.

I spent hours playing against my brothers and friends growing up. We used to take the game so serious and a few controllers my have been broken in a fit of rage a time or two. Also I loved when Madden would commentate games. He has such a great knowledge of the game. He would make you look at some things that you normally wouldn’t pick up on, when watching a game. It was just football magic when he spoke. He has one of those captivating voices. When he retired he left a legacy behind. Many people have tried to fill his shoes, but Madden was just larger then life. Even with madden retired he lives on not only in video games but with other commentators quoting Madden. He has truly helped shape the NFL into what it is today.
