Director Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on the John Wick series, has been passionately discussing his ambitious plans for reviving the iconic ’80s fantasy film Highlander. After years of anticipation, Deadline has now confirmed that the project is officially greenlit. Furthermore, Henry Cavill, previously reported to be attached to the project, is still set to take on a leading role. The highly-anticipated reboot is poised to deliver a blockbuster fantasy experience with a substantial budget. Despite potential setbacks due to recent writers’ and actors’ strikes, the production is aiming for a 2024 kick-off.

The original 1986 Highlander movie, starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, delved into a world where immortals pursued one another in contemporary New York City, with their origins dating back centuries. The inaugural film spawned four sequels, as well as various TV series, animated adaptations, and comic book expansions.

Stahelski attributes the lengthy development process to the challenge of respecting the extensive mythology of the Highlander brand, in stark contrast to the continuously evolving narrative of the John Wick franchise.

“I’ve been devoted to Highlander for years, primarily for Henry Cavill,” Stahelski revealed in a recent interview with Deadline. “Retroactively building a universe is no easy task. The key distinction between Wick and Highlander lies in the fact that, with Highlander, we’re not merely serving a film franchise; we’re preserving seven seasons of television, two spin-offs, and five films’ worth of mythology. If I were to embark on a Highlander remake today, it would demand an intricate exploration of its expansive universe within the first two hours. A Highlander TV series would be a fantastic endeavor, allowing us to delve into the rich backstory and potential of this world. Adapting such a vast mythology is a unique challenge, but I concur that it’s a worthy one to tackle. With John Wick, we had the opportunity to learn and evolve as we progressed.”

Considering the disappointment fans experienced when Cavill departed his fantasy series, The Witcher, his return to a sword-wielding role in the Highlander reboot is sure to thrill audiences.
