Farewell to an Icon: Remembering Morgan Lofting, the Voice of G.I. Joe’s Baroness

Story by Mitchell Smith

Today we loose another piece of our childhood. When you think back especially to Gi Joe many voices stick out, among them is one of the most iconic voices in the GI Joe world, the Baroness. Born on February 15, 1949, in Boston, Massachusetts, Morgan Lofting grew up with a love for performing arts. She studied drama at Stanford University and later earned a master’s degree in theater from the University of Southern California.

Her passion for acting initially led her to stage performances, where she honed her craft before transitioning to television and voice work. Lofting’s big break came in the 1980s when she was cast as the voice of the Baroness in G.I. Joe. Her portrayal of the cunning and intelligent Cobra officer became iconic, thanks to her ability to blend sophistication, menace, and charisma. The Baroness remains one of the most memorable villains in animation history, and Lofting’s work on the character has earned her a loyal fan base. In addition to G.I. Joe, Lofting lent her voice to numerous other animated series and projects. She appeared in The Transformers as Firestar, Moonracer, and other characters, showcasing her ability.

Lofting also contributed to series like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Star Blazers, and The Centurions. Each role demonstrated her range as an actress. Lofting also has a memoir, Voice of a Baroness, where she reflects on her life in entertainment and the evolution of voice acting as an art form. There have been several other wonderful actors who have voiced the Baroness but for me a millions of others, Morgan Lofting will forever be our Baroness. Her work will be forever be etched into our memories. RIP Morgan Lofting.
