G.I. Joe Underappreciated Featuring ‘Payload’!

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at a G.I. Joe figure that I was fortunate enough to have the 1989 version of as a kid. 1989 Payload came with the Crusader. I still have the original shell with good working landing gear. The original Payload came with one of the Joes largest vehicles, and a holy grail, the Defiant. The first 2 figures are really cool and I love everything about them.

Then there was v3, 4, & 5. The body of the figure is alright, nothing too flashy but solid. They reused the same figure for all 3 versions only with different color schemes. I’m not sure why they used this head 3 times. The first one is different and unique, but I don’t think it was good enough to use on all three versions. I think it would have been better to use the original head with a normal type helmet. I played around with some head swapping just to see what he could have been.

I never liked the solid mold helmets but I realize the technology wasn’t as great back then and not all figures could have a removable helmet. I love the first 2 versions, but although I’m on the fence about the last three I’m happy I have all versions Hasbro made of Payload, and I think the head swap really gives the last 3 versions a whole new feel. Who would love to see Payload in a Classified version? Top pic I found years ago and saved, but I’m not sure who took this awesome shot. Make sure to check back for our next discussion.
