GI Joe’s Next Evolution: Why Gundam Mobile Suits Belong on the Battlefield Against Cobra

The year is 20XX. Cobra has done the impossible.
Deep beneath the Arctic ice, Cobra Commander unveils his latest weapon: towering combat machines standing over sixty feet tall. Powered by stolen Cybertronian technology, reverse-engineered Battle Android Trooper systems, and experimental M.A.R.S. Industries weapons platforms, these giants threaten to tip the balance of power forever.
The G.I. Joe team watches in disbelief.
For decades, the Joes have battled Cobra’s tanks, aircraft, submarines, weather dominators, and endless super weapons. Yet this is different. Conventional vehicles are outmatched. Skystrikers can’t penetrate the armor. MOBAT tanks are destroyed before they get within firing range.
General Hawk knows the world needs something new.
That’s when Dr. Adele Burkhart, working alongside the Joe team’s top engineers, unveils Project Vanguard: advanced Mobile Suits inspired by experimental exoskeleton technology and cutting-edge military robotics. Unlike Cobra’s crude giant weapons, these machines are designed for elite operators. Each Mobile Suit reflects the personality and specialty of its pilot.
Suddenly, the fit between Gundam and G.I. Joe becomes obvious.
Both franchises have always been grounded in military conflict. While Gundam explores the politics and consequences of war through giant robots, G.I. Joe focuses on highly trained specialists fighting a global terrorist organization. The themes are remarkably compatible.
Imagine Duke piloting a command-focused Mobile Suit equipped with advanced battlefield sensors and communications systems. Scarlett would utilize a fast, agile reconnaissance suit designed for intelligence gathering and precision strikes. Heavy Duty would operate a heavily armored assault suit capable of taking on Cobra’s largest mechanized threats.
The villains would be equally compelling.
Destro would undoubtedly create his own line of M.A.R.S.-produced Mobile Suits, marketing them to the highest bidder while secretly supplying Cobra. The Baroness would pilot a sleek black Mobile Suit loaded with electronic warfare capabilities. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes could engage in legendary sword duels atop skyscrapers using specialized close-combat Mobile Suits.
Even Cobra Commander’s ego fits perfectly within this concept. One can easily imagine him demanding the largest and most intimidating Mobile Suit ever constructed, covered in Cobra insignias and equipped with enough firepower to level a city.
Critics might argue that giant robots would overshadow traditional G.I. Joe storytelling. Yet the franchise has already embraced science fiction countless times. From the MASS Device to Serpentor’s creation, from weather-control satellites to genetic engineering, G.I. Joe has never been limited by realism.
Mobile Suits would simply represent the next logical escalation in the eternal arms race between G.I. Joe and Cobra.
More importantly, the crossover would create exciting storytelling opportunities. Instead of replacing classic vehicles and characters, Mobile Suits would enhance them. Missions could involve infantry support, special operations, espionage, and large-scale mechanized combat all within the same narrative.
In many ways, Gundam Mobile Suits don’t feel out of place in the G.I. Joe universe at all.
They feel like something Cobra has been trying to build for years—and something the Joes would inevitably have to counter.
Knowing Cobra Commander, it’s only a matter of time before he tries.
