Last we heard, an ‘Escape From New York’ remake was in the works, with actors like Tom Hardy, Jason Statham, and Charlie Hunnam reportedly being considered to play the role originated by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter’s classic 1981 film. The possibility of that remake has now become a reality, as Fox has won the rights to distribute the film, with Carpenter returning to produce and oversee the creative development of the project.

According to Deadline, Fox emerged victorious from a competitive bidding war for the rights to remake ‘Escape From New York.’ Carpenter will return to act as an executive producer, and will oversee the creative side of things, which should make fans rest a little easier. Maybe.

Carpenter’s 1981 film followed Kurt Russell’s iconic character Snake Plissken, a convict who’s transported to a dystopian future New York, which has been transformed into a massive, post-apocalyptic prison. To earn a pardon and win his freedom, Plissken must rescue the president (Donald Pleasence) from the prison’s big bad (Isaac Hayes). If he fails, a device attached to his body will detonate, obliterating him along with his chance at freedom.

Last we heard, Joel Silver was producing a remake, with Tom Hardy and Jason Statham’s names being tossed about to play the role of Plissken. Charlie Hunnam was also rumored to be taking the role at one point (along with Chris Hemsworth), but Deadline adds that those rumors were nothing more than wishful thinking from Hunnam’s fans.

Well, what do you guys think? Are you down for an ‘Escape From New York’ remake as long as Carpenter is involved, or are you giving this report some serious side-eye?
