Mutant Mayhem: Revisiting the Bizarre Brilliance of the 1993 Monstro Viper!

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to The Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at the 1993 G.I. Joe Mega Marine Monstro Viper. Mega Marines are a bit of an acquired taste, at least probably more so for the older Joe crowd. This is a line I knew nothing about until I got back into Joes in the mid 2000’s. The Monstro Viper is even more of an oddity along a military based toy line. I do get the pull though, to a 10 year old in 1993 these were probably awesome.

Me I have always embraced both the military aspect and the fantasy aspect of GI Joe so I love this line as much as many other sub teams. I got this as a gift and it came neatly boxed up and protected. Articulation is at a minimum with legs moving forward and backwards. The right arm can be lifted and it springs back down in a swatting motion. The left arm swivels at the elbow and wrist and I thought it would be funny to have him sword fighting a Joe. The stomach folds out and the moldable bio armor could be pressed in to make a bomb.

There is a YouTube review by Serpentors Lair’s own Timmer that is really good. This is an interesting figure and I think I want to mesh him with Cobra La. Who had a Monstro Viper as a kid? Was this a really great figure? Make sure to check back next week for the next discussion at The Outpost.
