Review of ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ Documentary: The Legacy of ‘We Are The World

Story by Mitchell Smith

Well hello everyone. Today we take a look at the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop” now streaming! This is the story of the 1985 hit “We Are The World” that was made to help feed the starving people in Africa. The song was recorded in one night and included nearly 40 of the top artists in 1985. Here we are 39 years later and this song still takes me on an emotional roller coaster with so many great and unique voices.

Anyone who ever was in the high school chorus and went to an all city or all county event gets the idea of smashing your best voices in a room, practicing all day and then going to put on a show that night gets an idea of what this awesome group of singers must have been like. This is such a great documentary I cannot put it into words it’s something you have to watch and if you know you know.

The vision of Quincy Jones, Mike Omartian, Micheal Jackson, Lionel Richie, and their team to select the artists, get them to come to the recording studio, mix and match the wide variety of voices and ranges, and keep them all focused throughout the night was remarkable in itself. The end result is a song so memorable and powerful that they still raise money today to help people in need. The song opened the gateway to other music events such as Farm Aid and Live Aid. This is a powerful documentary and if you love music as much as I do you will love watching this. Have a great week everyone.
