Revisiting a Classic: The Lasting Impact of ‘9 to 5’ on Film, TV, and Broadway

Story By Mitchell Smith

Hello everybody, today I’m rolling it back to 1980. “9 to 5” was a hit and starred Dolly Parton, Lilly Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. This is a comedy about 3 women Doralee, Violet, and Judy who find themselves in some trouble with their boss Mr Hart. While Hart tries to blackmail Doralee into spending the night with him the girls discover he has been stealing from the company and kid nap him.

While he is confined to his bedroom the girls take over the office and improve quality for all the workers. This is a classic 80’s movie and I remember watching it as a kid. This has a wonderful cast and even though I have not watched it in nearly 30 years this has stuck with me over the years. The movie inspired a TV series that aired from 1982 (great year by the way) to 1983 and from 1986-1988. In 2009 is was turned into a Broadway production and originally the movie won many awards including best original song for the title song “9 to 5” written and performed by Dolly Parton.

Overall this is a great movie and if you have never watched it, make sure to check it out. l Have a great week everyone.
