The Muppet Movie” Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary with a Special Theater Re-Release

For two exclusive days next month, “The Muppet Movie” will be shown in theaters to commemorate its 45th anniversary. This special event is hosted by Fathom Events as part of their Big Screen Classics series. On June 2 and 3, audiences can relive the joy and nostalgia of the Muppets’ first cinematic journey.

Originally debuting in 1979, “The Muppet Movie” marked the debut film appearance of the beloved Muppet characters. The upcoming screenings will feature an exclusive introduction by renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, who will provide insights into the movie’s production and the legacy of Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. Audiences can catch the film in select cities across the nation with showtimes at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on June 2, and at 7 p.m. on June 3. Tickets are available through FathomEvents.com.

Directed by James Frawley, the film chronicles Kermit the Frog’s adventure from his swamp to Hollywood, accompanied by an array of characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo. Puppeteers Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz, and Richard Hunt brought these characters to life. The film features memorable musical numbers, including the Oscar-nominated song “Rainbow Connection,” and appearances by celebrities such as Orson Welles and Steve Martin. The plot thickens with Kermit’s encounter with the villainous Doc Hopper, but ultimately leads to the Muppets’ rise to stardom.

“The Muppet Movie” was a significant success, grossing over $65 million on a budget of $8 million, and paved the way for future Muppet films and projects. Although the Muppets’ future in film remains uncertain following recent developments, their legacy continues to endure. Fans can look forward to this limited theatrical re-release and stay updated on future Muppet projects through Collider.
