The fearsome Hydro-Viper has resurfaced in Hasbro’s G.I. Joe Classified Series, and this week, our friend YorktownJoe takes a closer look at this monstrous addition to Cobra’s ranks.
Originally introduced to collectors in 1988, the Hydro-Viper was anything but your ordinary Cobra trooper. With its menacing appearance, specialized diving equipment, and sinister science-fiction origins, it remains one of the most unusual characters in the classic A Real American Hero toy line.

A Classic Cobra Monster Gets the Classified Treatment
This modern six-inch figure brings back the Hydro-Viper with updated sculpting, detailed equipment, and the unmistakable character design that made the original figure stand out on toy shelves nearly four decades ago.
Classified Series figure #199 also comes equipped with seven character-inspired accessories, including a diving helmet, backpack, diving knife, two fins, a harpoon launcher, and even a pet devil ray!

The Terror Beneath Cobra Island
For longtime G.I. Joe fans, the Hydro-Viper represents an era when Cobra’s ranks were becoming increasingly bizarre, dangerous, and visually unforgettable.
Cobra’s elite underwater operatives underwent extreme experimentation intended to increase their effectiveness in hostile deep-sea environments. The result was a terrifying amphibious commando unlike anything encountered in ordinary military operations.
That strange mixture of military science fiction, horror-inspired design, and classic G.I. Joe world-building helped the Hydro-Viper earn a memorable place in the franchise’s history.
