Welcome to Cobra Commander’s House of Horrors!
Originally broadcast on October 1, 1985, “The Funhouse” follows a G.I. Joe mission to rescue scientists captured by Cobra. What initially appears to be a straightforward assault on a Cobra installation becomes something much stranger when Flint and his fellow Joes discover that the enemy has transformed the facility into an elaborate maze of lethal attractions.
Instead of simply surrounding the building and attacking together, Flint divides his team into smaller groups, setting up a series of encounters that mix slapstick comedy with surprisingly intense moments of danger.
It’s an episode that perfectly captures the wonderfully unpredictable spirit of 1980s action cartoons. One moment, the Joes are making sarcastic remarks about Cobra Commander’s ridiculous inventions. The next, beloved members of the team appear to be fighting for their lives.
Balloons, Hallucinations, and Cobra Commander’s Twisted Imagination
One of the episode’s most memorable sequences involves Dusty and Airtight encountering a hallway filled with colorful balloons decorated with Cobra Commander’s face.
It looks ridiculous enough to belong at a child’s birthday party. Naturally, Dusty decides to pop one.
Big mistake.
The balloon releases a hallucinogenic gas that causes Dusty to see his fellow Joe as a horrifying version of Cobra Commander. What follows is a wonderfully strange scene that demonstrates just how imaginative Sunbow’s writers and animators could be.

Dusty discovers that Cobra’s carnival attractions have a nasty surprise. Episode still via JoeGuide.com.
The Roller Coaster From Hell!
Meanwhile, Alpine and Bazooka find themselves invited aboard a Cobra-themed roller coaster by a mechanical carnival barker.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a Cobra production if the ride didn’t feature a deadly shooting gallery!
Bazooka and Alpine’s contrasting personalities make their adventure particularly entertaining. Their banter is one of the highlights of the episode, even as the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

Flint and Lady Jaye Face the Ultimate Trap
Perhaps the most dramatic storyline belongs to Flint and Lady Jaye. As the two navigate Cobra’s maze, they encounter robotic versions of Cobra Commander, turning their mission into a desperate fight for survival.
The episode even creates the impression that some of the Joe team have been killed, giving the action a surprisingly serious edge for a weekday afternoon cartoon.
Flint’s determination becomes central to the action, while Lady Jaye proves once again why she’s among the most resourceful members of the team.
And through it all, Cobra Commander appears to be enjoying every second of his outrageous creation.
Why This 1985 Episode Still Deserves Your Attention
More than four decades after its original broadcast, “The Funhouse” remains a memorable example of what made the Sunbow G.I. Joe series so entertaining.
It has everything a fan could want: a delightfully unhinged Cobra Commander, familiar Joe personalities, imaginative action sequences, comedy, suspense, and just enough apparent danger to keep viewers wondering what will happen next.
There’s also something undeniably nostalgic about a cartoon that could transform carnival balloons, bowling balls, roller coasters, and mechanical clowns into weapons of war.
And that’s precisely why revisiting these episodes with G.I. Retro is such a treat. Whether you watched them on television in 1985 or discovered them decades later, there’s always another detail, ridiculous Cobra scheme, or classic character moment worth celebrating.
