Issue 73 showed the Star Viper return with the very expensive piece of technology. However the divide between Serpentor and “Acting” Cobra Commander Fred VII has led us to the upcoming story arc…the Cobra Civil War!! And indeed the shooting has begun. Feel free to check out the review of Issue 73 in case you missed it. (You can catch up on other “Now You Know With YorktownJoe” reviews there as well!)
On to the issue
The issue begins with Lt. Falcon (I’m just going to call him Falcon) leading a small recon team to provide on site intelligence to the rest of the Joe team. He has Spirit and Sneak Peak with him surveying the fighting. Dial-Tone has the radio comm’s back to the FLAGG. Also on their team is Gung Ho and Tunnel Rat.
The Baroness is having difficulties fighting and is yelling at her troops as they are getting mowed down. Ever worked for anyone like that?
Back at Cobra HQ, Fred VII continues to act as Cobra Commander, although he is not the tactician that the Commander was. He loves electronics and tech gadgetry, but he is no Sun Tzu. Zartan and the Dreadnoks are hanging out eating chocolate donuts and consuming grape soda. Too bad Dr. Mindbender sided with Serpentor. The ‘Noks could use some dental cleaning and repairs…
Zartan mocks the “Commander” about his inability to lead. Things are headed out of control very quickly.
Back at the Freighter, Serpentor and the Twins are under heavy fire. A B.A.T. is serving the role of a Tele-Viper by providing a phone call from Dr. Mindbender to Serpentor. The communication is coming through, even though the B.A.T. takes a hit to the noggin.
Hama’s Serpentor demonstrates a slightly more stable mindset than Sunbow’s rendition. But this stability might prove to be short-lived.
Spirit lets Falcon know something or someone has been following them. He is going to circle back and check it out to cover their drag (or rear) position.
Baroness’s Cobra Troopers are getting mowed down while trying to advance to take the Freighter. It is believed that they are softening them up so Serpentor and the Twins can make a break for it once the numbers have been whittled down.
Hawk’s boss General Hollingsworth flies in with a special guest: Dr. Mindbender. Hawk starts to draw his pistol to end this foolishness, but is told to stand down.
The Joe’s have to enter the fight on Cobra Island on behalf of Serpentor. There is some mumbo jumbo about Constitutional Monarchy vs an evil dictatorship. That’s foolish. They’re all terrorists.
HOWEVER, the Pentagon will get the black box back that was stolen from the Joe’s by the Star Viper in Issue 72.
The artist draws the tension in Hawk’s hand, reminiscent of the Arthur clenched fist memes.
Falcon gets the call from Hawk with new orders. They need to take the flight control tower at the airfield and continue to report from there. Falcon reminds Hawk their recon squad is only 6 Joe’s.
Spirit catches up to the person who was tailing them. He begs not to be killed and offers them a way to get to the Tower without being seen. It’s Captain Minh, the Vietnamese fishing guide who Fred used for a ride to get close to Cobra Island. He didn’t get killed when the Mamba blew up his boat.
And he has been watching for an opportunity for revenge.
Minh directs them to a drainage tunnel. Tunnel Rat takes the point, and gets to exercise his specific specialty.
Then a vintage ad for your enjoyment.
Now back to G.I.Joe (or in this case, Cobra!)
Serpentor rides out of the Freighter in his HISS Tank and proceeds to obliterate more Cobra Troopers near a Maggot artillery weapon.
The Baroness screams over the comms to Fred that Serpentor has broken out. She also calls him a worthless imposter. And we had high hopes for this couple…
The Joe’s Tomahawk landing force joins the fray. The artist does a fantastic job drawing a significant number of detailed Joe’s in a single panel. There are injuries as the Tomahawk is shot up.
They have to blow up and disable the ASP emplacements in order for the pair of C-130’s and the rest of the landing force to safely land.
Maverick provides some cover with the Vector jet, then flies off to reload.
Fred rides over with the Dreadnoks on his way to engage at the Freighter, and stumbles upon the Joe’s and the C-130’s landing. They blast one of the C-130’s with the Thunder Machine’s dual Gatling guns.
The Joe’s are in disarray as one C-130 is unloading AWE Strikers, and the other one has just been shot up while trying to land and unload.
Buzzer snatches Hawk and pulls him on board the Thunder Machine.
Serpentor arrives in his HISS tank with the Baroness tied up as a hostage on the front bumper, to discourage people from shooting at them.
Fred yells order at Thrasher, who replies that the armor on their flank is not the friendly Maggot artillery pieces, but rather Destro and his Iron Grenadiers.
And he brought all his forces with him…
How will this turn out!? Find out next time in Marvel comics!
But before we go, here is the map of Cobra Island along with a breakdown of forces and alliances. A very helpful resource to keep track of all the alliances as the action unfolds.
Issue 74 showed the Cobra Civil War in full swing!! The fighting has begun, and will no doubt continue!
Hope you enjoyed this review!
Tune in soon for Issue 75.
