NOW YOU KNOW WITH YORKTOWNJOE – G.I.JOE MARVEL ISSUE #71 REVIEWED!

Background

Issue 70 saw a lot of action in Sierra Gordo. There was political intrigue and shoot-outs as well as self-sacrifice on behalf of others. Feel free to check out the review of Issue 70 in case you missed it. (You can catch up on other “Now You Know With YorktownJoe” reviews there as well!)

On to the issue

Image

The issue begins where the previous issue ended with the Joe’s dealing with the aftermath of the plane crash. Thrasher the Dreadnok is badly injured and Wild Bill is trying to help him. Zarana and Monkeywrench offer no help.

Crazylegs assists Wild Bill…

Image

…by providing anesthesia. Evidently concussions weren’t considered dangerous in the 80’s. I stopped counting how many injuries Thrasher experiences in this story arc. Some accidental, some intentional, and some self-inflicted…

Image

Zarana and Monkeywrench disguise themselves as refugees hauling the unconscious Thrasher with them. They offer to take General Villavaca’s men on the bus to the site so they can “kill the gringos.” But it is all a clever feint.

Image

Once on the bus, Zarana uses a smelling salt capsule to rouse Thrasher back to consciousness. Then she hits him on his broken arm and he goes berserk injuring nearly ever soldier on the bus.

Image

This next whole page is just violence and mayhem. There is a bad crash, and even the driver is ejected,

Image

This situation is resolved when Zarana gives Thrasher yet another concussion.

Back in the capital city of Rio Lindo…

Image

Mr. Goodfellow, villain of the North American Banana Monopoly lets the panicking General Villavaca know he should loot the treasury of Sierra Gordo and then flee. A courageous response by corrupt fools.

Image

Mr. Goodfellow calls ahead for his company seaplane to get fueled up and prepared for a hasty departure. General Villavaca heads for the treasury. He plans to have his troops head on a wild goose chase so he can loot the treasury.

Image

Wild Bill takes the uniforms of Villavaca’s men and ties them up in their skivvies. He lets a refugee take the damaged bus to flee with the other civilians. His plan is to separate and draw any other danger away from the people.

Image

Later, we see Wild Bill explaining that they should get to the port city and stow aboard a banana ship headed north.

But the refugees come back for them with a way to get them ALL to safety.

Image

General Villavaca arrives at the treasury, only to be confronted. He is greeted by Destro (now in his gold helmet deco), his Sergeant Major (now sporting Iron Grenadier colors) and El Jefe, leader of the revolutionaries (or maybe counter-revolutionaries.)

Image

Zarana is driving the bus, and decides to run a roadblock just outside the city. The bus is already damaged, so why not crash through and get into a firefight with a busload of refugees on board.

Image

General Villavaca spills everything he knows, including Mr. Goodfellow’s plan to flee the country on a seaplane near the downtown docks.

Image

Wild Bill is hanging out the bus entrance shooting a pistol at a couple of jeeps and trucks in pursuit of them. He makes some snide comments about Zarana’s driving, all the while trying to hit a moving target, while riding in a moving target.

This line is amusing…

Image

Over at the docks, Mr. Goodfellow is trying to rush his pilot Bob to hurry up with the pre-flight checklist.
Destro loads General Villavaca and El Jefe into his vehicle at the treasury and they proceed to head to the dosck.

Image

There is a chase scene spanning multiple pages, but then…

Image

The jeep with one of Villavaca’s Captains crashes into another pursuit vehicle. He notices General Villavaca is on a truck with El Jefe and Destro. He doesn’t realize the General is a prisoner, so he calls him a traitor and shoots him dead.

Having avoided that collision, Zarana drives the bus through a fence and into several crates of bananas next to Bob’s seaplane.

Image

Bob must have been on a serious smoke break or temporarily in the loo. If he didn’t hear a bus crash and Wild Bill loading all the refugees and Joe’s and Dreadnoks onto his plane.

He protests while paddling around his plane in a raft.

Image

Maverick and Wild Bill get to the cockpit and begin to takeoff, as Destro and El Jefe arrive just a bit too late.

Image

Thrasher begins complaining that he doesn’t want to be on the flight because of what happened in the previous issue, on his previous flight.

But just then Mr. Goodfellow emerges with an Uzi, and his suitcase filled with cash.

Image

Thrasher wigs out, opens the emergency door opening and pushes Mr. Goodfellow out. The look on his face is worth an extra look:

Image

Crazylegs saves Thrasher, and Wild Bill concludes with a joke that it is getting drafty and they should close the door.

Issue 71 saw a lot of action in Sierra Gordo. There was political intrigue and car chases and concussions. Lots of concussions. This ends the story arc, as they fly away to safety.
