The uncertain success of Star Trek 3 has chummed waters that the franchise might return to TV before long, something echoed in numerous reports over the last year. We may now have official confirmation however, as Paramount has reportedly invited one fan to pitch a new idea, signaling at least the potential for another TV Star Trek iteration.

Take this one with a few replicated grains of salt, but according to TrekMovie, Paramount has extended a pitch invitation to “Star Trek Uncharted” (originally “Star Trek Beyond,” but changed for sequel reasons) writer Michael Gummelt. Not only does the invitation signal Paramount’s interest in a new Trek series (ultimately, CBS would decide whether or not to move forward), it also marks a rare occasion a non-industry fan pitch has made it up the chain.

Keeping in mind that Paramount might change any number of aspects on Gummelt’s pitch, should they take development further at all, Star Trek Uncharted would seek to fit in either classic or rebooted Trek continuity, approximately 200 years after the adventures of Captain Kirk, in which the galaxy has been devastated by a far-reaching conflict initiated by the Romulans. So reads the basic pitch:

A mysterious signal is received from the Andromeda Galaxy, claiming to be from the creators of life in the Milky Way, and inviting us to come meet them.

A new “space folding” technology developed– a Hyperwarp Gate constructed to warp jump 2.5 million light years to the Andromeda Galaxy.

Probes have returned successfully with data about Andromeda.

A new USS Enterprise is built. It is the first ship to bear the name since the original Enterprise was destroyed in the Galactic War.

The Enterprise is the first ship assigned to the new galaxy.

It’s Mission:

To explore strange, new worlds.
Seek out new life and new civilizations.
To chart the Andromeda Galaxy and its inhabitants.
Establish first contact.
Form alliances and diplomatic relations.
The Enterprise will occasionally return to Milky Way for staffing changes, refits, extended leave.
Meanwhile, Starbase A-1 is being built, will be complete at end of first year and two more ships will join the expedition. Admiral Oviedo San Lagos will be the commander of Starbase A-1.

When last we heard, CBS may have been looking to court the team behind Star Trek: Federation for a new series, among them X-Men franchise leader Bryan Singer, Mission Imposible: Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie, as well as producer Robert Burnett and writer Geoffrey Thorne. Little developed on the front of that rumor, though it at least fits the same mold of Paramount looking into original pitches outside the current Trek continuity.

Gummelt acknowledged unlikelihood of the project’s success, but should Paramount or CBS truly seek a new Star Trek TV series, how should the studio handle continuity outside of the (for now) ongoing films?
