G.I. Joe Inside the Filecards Featuring ‘Footloose’!

Story by Staff Writer ‘Shaft’ Today I am starting with the G.I. Joe class of ’85. We will look at Footloose today. He is listed as “Infantry” for his PMS and “Special Services (basketball coach)” for his SMS. Obviously he is an 11B Infantryman however for his special services I could not find anything US Army related to that kind of “specialty”. If Hama was intending for some of these to be skills the Joes picked up in the civilian world prior to military service then he probably should have…

G.I. JOE INSIDE THE FILECARDS FEATURING ‘MUTT’!

Story by Staff Writer ‘Shaft’ Today we look at G.I. Joe Mutt whose PMS is “Dog Handler” and SMS is “Infantry”. Nowadays a military working dog handler in the US Army is handled by a soldier in the Military Police Branch, specifically the 31K Working Dog Handler MOS. So a modern take on Mutt is he enlisted into Infantry as an 11B before re-classing as a 31K. However during Hama’s time he may have been thinking of Mutt more as an Infantryman trained as a dog handler during the Vietnam…

G.I. Joe Inside The Filecards Featuring ‘STALKER’

Story by Staff Writer SHAFT Today I take a look at G.I. Joe ‘Stalker‘. He is listed as “Ranger” and has a PMS of “Infantry” and SMS of “Medic” and “Interpreter”. We once again are into potentially three different US Army branches of Infantry, Medical Department and Military Intelligence, which would not be possible in a real world scenario. First let’s look at the word “Ranger’. This can be ambiguous as the US Army has two different types of Rangers: A soldier going through Ranger School which is open to…

G.I. JOE INSIDE THE FILECARDS FEATURING ‘BREAKER’

Breaker is interesting in that he only has a PMS listed (Infantry) and no SMS. It also indicates he went to Signal School, which is what MOS’s in the Signal Corps Branch (25 series) go to. So his Infantry PMS and Signal School are very conflicting. What is usually not known is an RTO (Radio Tele-Phone Operator) within an Infantry platoon is not from the 25 series, but rather an 11B Infantryman assigned the radio. They usually give it to someone in the lower ranks (Privates). 25 series MOS’s typically…

G.I. JOE INSIDE THE FILECARDS FEATURING ‘SCARLETT’

Today i delve into the filecard of the G.I. Joe character Scarlett. She has “Intelligence” listed as her PMS and “Classified” as SMS. Her filecard also mentions “Counter Intelligence” so that helps define what MOS she would be in, which is a 35L Counter-Intelligence Special Agent. From what I read a few years ago a 35L is not an entry level MOS but reading now on the US Army’s website that has appeared to change. If you go by Scarlett enlisting years ago then she probably would have started out…
