Issue 72 foreshadowed a series of event that is leading to the coming Cobra Civil War! Feel free to check out the review of Issue 72 in case you missed it. (You can catch up on other “Now You Know With YorktownJoe” reviews there as well!)
On to the issue
The issue picks up where the last issue left off. The Joe’s are investigating how their HQ could have been infiltrated by the Star Viper in Issue 72.
Junkyard tips them off that there is something “under” the new Desert Fox 6WD and Spirit spots some fingerprints. They are astonished that someone could have leaped on to their moving vehicle and then held on the whole way to the Pit.
A C5-A Galaxy comes in for a landing, and Hawk prepares for the fallout to begin. Of course as readers, we would have dismissed this as a month had gone by in real time. But what is the likelihood that word of the infiltration debacle would have already made it to Washington and someone would be flying out to Utah to tell Hawk how bad it is in a a single page? That would be pretty bad if Hawk was giving the Pentagon a play by play WHILE the car chase that ended the last issue was still in progress, right??
General Austin shows Hawk his flying office in the sky, and it is pretty impressive. But he is being told there are paper-pushers who are upset at the loss of the black box technology that the Star Viper stole.
And speaking of the Star Viper…
He descends from his near earth orbit trajectory and begins his approach to Cobra Island.
He believes he is going to have a hero’s welcome. But he is about to be as disappointed as a kid who finds his parents in an angry shouting match when he gets up on his birthday.
Serpentor and Cobra Commander* (*Actually Fred VII masquerading in the battle armor he designed for Cobra Commander) are in a heated argument. They are both pushing each other to the limit as the Stiletto is coming in for a landing.
Shouting and arguing is devolving into petty name calling. The Star Viper is truly dejected.
Things go from bad to worse, and the two leaders are being physically restrained from fighting each other.
The Star Viper offers the black box to Serpentor who bats it away dismissively and storms off. Dr. Mindbender quickly picks it up as the Baroness is reaching for it and flutters away after Serpentor. He seems to be siding with his created amalgamation.
The Star Viper asks if he is going to open it, and the good Dr. Mindbender defers and states there is going to be a Civil War in a matter of minutes. As we readers know, there is an anti-tamper device on the black box. If it is opened without the proper code…that would be a rather abrupt ending to the story arc. As well as making anyone nearby very crispy.
Back on the FLAGG, Keel-Haul and Hawk are working on preparations for extracting the black box.
Things are getting heated on Cobra Island. The Serpentor faction seems to be backed by Dr. Mindbender (They both like capes). The Crimson Guard is with them, although the one in the background of this picture is getting his poor brains blown out. The B.A.T.S. are also with them, since they are under the control of Dr. Mindbender.
Serpentor said he didn’t want troops to die for him, but rather to fight and live for him.
Oh, and “Sorry about that Siegie in the background.” Pretty sure his widow will be compensated with a replacement hubby from a compatible series.
Serpentor has headaches induced by his multiple personalities “having a disagreement” about strategy. It is rather creepy.
The Joe’s are inbound in the Conquest X-30 and a “confiscated” Cobra Mamba.
Tomax, Xamot, Dr. Mindbender and Serpentor discuss strategy. Mindbender wants to go to Washington DC to try to trade the stolen black box for military aid that could help the fight against Cobra Commander and his advancing forces.
A B.A.T. appears to be observing the conversation, and the art showing the reflection of the characters is pretty cool.
Little do they know, that Fred VII added a spy camera and microphone to this B.A.T. to send a secure feed back to Baroness and him. How they knew which B.A.T. would be in the room guarding and observing, we’ll never know.
The artist did a good job of even adding funny titles to the spines of the books on Fred VII’s mantle.
Dr. Mindbender takes off in a traditional Cobra transport lift helicopter to take the black box to Washington to trade.
But Fred VII and the Baroness are dispatching a Gyro-Viper in a Mamba to intercept them and shoot them down.
Dr. Mindbender realizes he is being pursued by one Mamba and another one is coming towards him from the opposite direction. Is this the end for our favorite mad dentist??
Lift-Ticket is piloting the stolen Mamba with the insertion team. He banks and fires his missiles as the other Mamba fires his. Lift-Ticket avoids getting hit, because of course he does. The Gyro-Viper is not so lucky.
Dr. Mindbender lives to fight another day and flies out of harm’s way unscathed.
Lift-Ticket drops off the insertion team and they move silently through to where they are headed.
Captain Minh wonders who these men are, but continues his game of hide and seek for the time being.
Elsewhere to the East in the Caribbean.
Destro and his Iron Grenadier forces are coming to enter the battle. His men are exercising and getting ready for battle.
How will this turn out!? Find out next time in Marvel comics!
Issue 73 showed the Star Viper return with the very expensive piece of technology. However the divide between Serpentor and “Acting” Cobra Commander Fred VII has led us to the upcoming story arc…the Cobra Civil War!! And indeed the shooting has begun.
Hope you enjoyed this review!
Tune in soon for Issue 74.
